What is “Cineconcerto”?

“The intense and inextricable bond between cinema and music, a fusion in which both parts complement each other and are simultaneusly independent, so that you are left wondering whether the notes drive the pictures, or the videos support the music”.
The first edition of Cineconcerto took place in 2016 in Montecarotto in the Marche region of Italy.
Inspired by the French Cinéconcert, the project was developed from an idea by Alessandro Chiatti, the original founder of 13 Gradi Est, a cultural association whose members are driven by artistic vision and the determination to promote their home village and its beautiful theatre. Convinced that art can be a stimulus, a driving force for experimentation and aggregation, the association has tried, through the various editions of the festival and theatre seasons, to create a common space for thought, research and sharing around Cineconcerto: a new artistic proposal, first of all perceptive and human, for listening and looking at reality. Over the years, local and international artists have toured the streets of the small village of Montecarotto. Some were experienced, some emerging, some traditional and some experimental. Cineconcerto has woven ties, contacts and friendships all over the world. Its mission is to share its vision with everyone, from the general public to the artists, the partners, the territory, the institutions, embracing art as a whole.
HISTORICALLY, CINÉ-CONCERT IS A SHOW WHICH COMBINES VIDEO PROJECTION, INCLUDING, BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY, SILENT FILM, WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF LIVE MUSIC. IT IS A FORM OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION THAT HAS ITS ROOTS IN SILENT FILM (1894-1929), AND WHICH WAS CHARACTERIZED BY THE ACCOMPANIMENT OF A SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA PERFORMING ORIGINAL SCORES BY MUSICIANS SPECIALIZED IN THE GENRE (E.G. LÉON MOREAU, PIETRO MASCAGNI, SERGEI PROKOFIEV, CHARLIE CHAPLIN). GRADUALLY, THE USE OF A COMPOSER BECAME MORE AND MORE RARE AND, EVENTUALLY, PIANO IMPROVIZATION REPLACED THE ORCHESTRA PLAYING A SCORE. IN THE 1970S, IN FRANCE WE SAW A SERIES OF DIFFERENT EXPERIMENTS, SUCH AS MUSIC GROUPS (“A DRAME MUSICAL INSTANTANÉ”), INSTITUTIONS (INSTITUTE LUMIÈRE, THE CINÉMATHÈQUE DE TOULOUSE) AND OTHER INITIATIVES THAT ATTEMPTED TO REINTERPRET THE SILENT FILM AND HAND DOWN ITS EXTRAORDINARY MODERNITY TO FUTURE GENERATIONS IN A BRAND NEW KEY. THE GENRE, POPULAR IN FRANCE FROM THE ’90S, TAKES SHAPE IN SEVERAL FESTIVALS, EVENTS AND EXHIBITS, WHICH USUALLY CONSIST IN MUSIC ACCOMPANYING FILMS IN CINEMAS AND THEATERS, REINTERPRETING FAMOUS SILENT FILMS, BUT ALSO MASTERPIECES OF MODERN CINEMA.
WE ARE THEREFORE WITNESSING A FORM OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION WHICH IS EXTREMELY LIVELY AND ECLECTIC AND ALLOWS YOU TO REVIEW AND RE-DISCOVER BOTH LONG-MEDIUM LENGTH MOVIES AND SHORT FILMS, WHETHER IN THEIR ORIGINAL FORM OR CREATIVELY RE-EDITED, ACCOMPANIED BY ROCK, JAZZ, CLASSICAL OR MODERN MUSIC.

Who can participate?

THE FESTIVAL IS OPEN TO ALL DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL FILMMAKERS, DIRECTORS AND MUSICIANS WHO WANT TO GET INVOLVED IN AN EXPERIMENTAL PROJECT BY COMBINING THEIR EXPERTISE, KNOWLEDGE AND PASSION IN A SINGLE PROJECT.
